Anambra State Ministry of Health

Services

Overview of Services

The Ministry of Health delivers a wide range of services through its network of facilities and programs. These services are designed to address the health needs of Anambra's population from prevention to treatment and rehabilitation.

Primary Healthcare

Our primary healthcare centers serve as the first point of contact for communities. Services include outpatient consultations, maternal and child health, family planning, nutrition counseling, and management of common illnesses. We operate over 200 primary health centers across all local government areas, with a focus on rural and underserved populations.

Hospital Services

We manage a network of general and specialist hospitals, including the Awka Specialist Hospital, Onitsha General Hospital, and Nnewi Teaching Hospital. These facilities provide inpatient care, surgical services, emergency medicine, laboratory diagnostics, and specialized clinics for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.

Immunization Programs

Our immunization unit coordinates routine and supplementary vaccination campaigns. We offer all WHO-recommended vaccines free of charge, including BCG, polio, measles, yellow fever, and COVID-19. Mobile teams reach hard-to-access areas, and we maintain a robust cold chain system to ensure vaccine potency.

Health Insurance (ASHIS)

The Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIS) provides affordable health coverage to residents. Enrollees access a comprehensive benefits package at accredited facilities. Premiums are subsidized for the poor, elderly, and persons with disabilities. Over 500,000 individuals are currently enrolled, with plans to reach universal coverage by 2027.

Disease Control and Surveillance

We monitor and respond to disease outbreaks through the State Epidemiological Unit. This includes surveillance for cholera, Lassa fever, meningitis, and other epidemic-prone diseases. We conduct contact tracing, case management, and public health campaigns to contain outbreaks and prevent spread.

Health Workforce Development

We invest in training and capacity building for healthcare workers. Programs include continuous medical education, leadership workshops, and specialized courses in emergency care, infection prevention, and health informatics. We also partner with universities to offer scholarships for nursing and medical students.

Reproductive and Child Health

Our reproductive health services include antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, postnatal care, and family planning. We aim to reduce maternal and child mortality through initiatives like the 'Safe Motherhood' program, which provides free delivery services in public facilities and emergency transport for obstetric complications.
