Urban Renewal & Development Projects

The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development oversees a portfolio of transformative projects aimed at improving the quality of life in Anambra's cities and towns. From road upgrades and drainage systems to public parks and market modernisation, each project is designed to create orderly, sustainable, and vibrant communities.

Flagship Projects

Onitsha Urban Renewal Phase II

Upgrade of 15km of roads, installation of modern drainage, street lighting, and creation of pedestrian walkways in the commercial heart of Onitsha. Completed 2023.

Awka Smart City Master Plan

A comprehensive 20-year development plan for the state capital, incorporating green spaces, mixed-use zones, and intelligent transport systems. Implementation began 2024.

Nnewi Central Market Modernisation

Reconstruction of the main market with modern stalls, improved sanitation, fire safety measures, and dedicated loading zones. Expected completion: Q3 2025.

Ekulu River Corridor Regeneration

Environmental restoration and development of a 5km green corridor along the Ekulu River in Enugu-Ukwu, featuring parks, bike paths, and flood control measures.

Statewide GIS Mapping Initiative

High-resolution aerial mapping and digital land record creation for all 21 LGAs, enabling accurate planning, tax administration, and dispute resolution. Phase 1 complete.

Affordable Housing Scheme – Phase I

Development of 500 housing units across three sites (Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi) with basic infrastructure, targeting low- and middle-income families. Construction starts 2025.
