Our Purpose

Mission & Vision

The Anambra State Ministry of Sports is established to develop, promote and regulate sports across the state. We are driven by a vision to see Anambra become Nigeria’s foremost sports destination — a place where talent is discovered early, nurtured professionally and celebrated globally.

Our Mission

  • To identify and groom grassroots sporting talent in all 21 local government areas.
  • To build and maintain world-class sporting infrastructure accessible to all citizens.
  • To foster a culture of fitness, recreation and healthy competition among residents.
  • To collaborate with national federations, private academies and international bodies for the advancement of sports.

    Ministry Established · 1999

    Creation of the Anambra State Ministry of Sports to centralise sports development.

    First State Sports Festival · 2002

    Inaugural Anambra State Sports Festival held in Awka with 12 sports.

    Grassroots Programme Launch · 2010

    Systematic talent scouting begins in all 21 LGAs, reaching over 500 schools.

    Stadium Renovation · 2018

    Major upgrade of Awka Township Stadium to international standard with synthetic track.

    Coaching Certification Scheme · 2021

    Partnership with National Institute for Sports to certify 150+ coaches and referees.

    Groundbreaking for a multi-sport complex in Onitsha, including aquatic centre and indoor arena.
