Anambra State Ministry of Transport

Services

Service A: Vehicle Registration & Licensing

We issue and renew vehicle number plates, driver’s licenses, and road worthiness certificates. Our digital platform allows for online applications and tracking, reducing wait times and eliminating middlemen. Services are available at our central office in Awka and local government service centres.

Service B: Public Transport Regulation

We license and monitor all commercial vehicles, including buses, taxis, tricycles (keke), and motorcycles (okada). Our team ensures compliance with safety standards, fare regulations, and route permits. We also operate the Anambra State Transport Company (ANTRACO) for intercity bus services.

Service C: Traffic Management & Safety

Through the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency (ANSTMA), we deploy traffic wardens, install traffic lights and road signs, and enforce traffic laws. We also run public education campaigns on road safety and coordinate emergency response to accidents.

Service D: Infrastructure Development

We plan, design, and supervise the construction of roads, bridges, bus stops, and park-and-ride facilities. Current projects include the dualization of the Onitsha–Awka Expressway and the development of a modern transport interchange in Nnewi.

Service E: Inland Waterways Development

We manage and develop the state’s riverine transport network, including jetties, ferries, and cargo terminals along the Niger and Anambra Rivers. This service supports trade, tourism, and connectivity for riverine communities.

Service F: Transport Data & Analytics

We collect and publish data on traffic flow, accident hotspots, and public transport usage. This information guides policy decisions and helps citizens plan their journeys. Our open data portal is accessible to researchers and developers.

Service G: Non-Motorized Transport Promotion

We advocate for walking and cycling by constructing pedestrian walkways, bike lanes, and secure parking. Pilot projects in Awka and Onitsha aim to reduce congestion and promote healthier lifestyles.

Service H: Special Permits & Licenses

We issue permits for oversized/overweight vehicles, temporary road closures, and special events involving road use. Applications can be submitted online or at our headquarters.
